Japan’s MOX Fuel Fabrication Plant Delayed Another Two Years

On December 16, Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited (JNFL) announced that it has decided to delay the completion date for the MOX (mixed-oxide) Fuel Fabrication Plant from the first half of the Japanese fiscal year (FY) 2022 (between April 1 and September 30, 2022) to the first half of FY 2024. This decision came just days after the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) approved changes to the MOX Plant to comply with new regulatory requirements (SF No. 1340 December 11, 2020). This approval follows JNFL’s establishment of enhanced safety measures for the MOX Plant that would require further construction work. The MOX plant is currently under construction in Rokkasho, in the Aomori Prefecture of Japan.
