National Reports to the IAEA on the safety of spent fuel management are being prepared

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA’s) Joint Convention is an international agreement that governs all aspects of spent fuel and radioactive waste management on a global scale. It is the only international, legally binding instrument to address the safety of spent fuel and radioactive waste management globally, which it accomplishes by establishing fundamental safety principles and implementing a peer review process. Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention, which include States with major nuclear power programs and those using radiation sources in medicine, industry, agriculture, and research, prepare a National Report on how they are applying stringent safety measures. The reports are submitted every three years for peer review by other Contracting Parties, who then present and discuss their National Reports during the Review Meeting in Country Group sessions.
