Revenue management

摘要

Revenue management represents one of the most successful and popular newer applications of operations research. Originally from the airline industry, revenue management is nowadays used by hotels, tour operators, shipping companies, car rental firms, and many other industries, with further applications on the horizon. Though the number of publications in this field has grown rapidly over the past decade, many research questions still remain open and new ones still arise due to new applications or changing business conditions. For example, made-to-order companies try to use revenue management techniques to incorporate economic aspects in decisions on accepting/rejecting orders more severely. Furthermore, the need of established airlines to compete with no-frills ones leads to the implementation of new concepts for capacity control based on dynamic pricing. With this special issue of OR Spectrum, we hope to contribute to answering some of these open questions. In total, the issue contains ten novel articles on revenue management and dynamic pricing. These articles are organized in two parts, with the first part containing theoretically oriented articles and the second part focussing on applications.
