Stereo sound for television and new video technologies were major consumer-electronics developments in 1984. Following the March 29 decision of the US Federal Communications Commission to authorize multichannel-sound telecasting, electronics manufacturers announced some 50 stereo-television models, and the broadcast networks soon aired the first TV programs with stereo sound. This was accompanied by other technological breakthroughs in video entertainment-miniature flat-screen color television, new applications of video disks, and a new video-tape format.
