A teacher from Barnsley, Yorkshire, received the top space award for excellence in education during a presentation at IAC 2008. Ms Anne Brumfitt (pictured) is the first living woman to receive the award since the inaugural winner Christine McAuliffe (the first teacher in space) who perished in the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986. For 15 years Brumfitt has inspired thousands of children to look to the stars. "Space is a beautiful wrapping paper to present science and mathematics," she said. "Space is sexy and children love it, they start an art activity and find out they are really doing maths as they explore space." Her work has included facilitating the Space Challenge Badge for the Girl Guides in the UK - to which over 300,000 Girl Guides signed up in the first four months of its launch.
