THE MIGHTY ATLAS

It is easy to regard the decision in May 1954 to proceed with full scale development of the Atlas, America's first ICBM, as a landmark in US missile history. In fact it was much more than that. The mechanism for putting the ICBM on a fast track to completion lay in a new and innovative management model through the Weapon System concept.
