HOTOL lands at the BIS!

Back in the mid 1980s Bob Parkinson MBE, current President of the British Interplanetary Society), and Alan Bond, Fellow of the BIS and Managing Director of Reaction Engines Ltd came up with the concept of a single-stage-to-orbit spaceplane to carry 7-tonne satellites into orbit for just 20% of the cost of expendable launch vehicles. Working for British Aerospace Space Systems at Stevenage, Bob came up with the vehicle design while Alan, who had worked with Rolls-Royce on rocket motors, provided a new type of engine.
