I read my first science-fiction novel at the age of fourteen. It was Ray Bradbury's marvellous 'Martian Chronicles' and, although I did not know this at the time, it belonged to the 'speculative fiction' category, a style of sci-fi that did not bother with dwelling too much-or at all-on machines and science, real or fantasized. It dealt with the exploration of the inner self and about poetry, more than about the colonization of the galaxy. This genre blossomed in the late fifties and sixties, culminating in my view with Philipp K. Dick and his eye-opening and troubling universe(s). Sci-fi continued to evolve and mature and new genres appeared, in line with a more dystopic era, such as W. Gibson's cyberpunk.
