MDA To Introduce New Complexities In Upcoming Tests of Sea-Based Missile Shield

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) plans to introduce new complexities and more realistic scenarios during a planned series of tests next year on its developmental sea-based missile shield, according to an MDA official. The tests will be the first involving U.S. Navy Aegis cruisers specifically modified to serve as full-time anti-missile platforms, according to Navy Rear Adm. Kathleen Paige, MDA program director for Aegis ballistic missile defense. Some of the upgrades include software with increased automation that aids in evaluating possible missile threats and guiding the interceptor rocket, she said.
