The U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has dropped plans to procure a new generation of data-relay satellites equipped with laser-optic communications technology, according to a senior official with the organization. The decision to terminate the multibil-lion-dollar Optical Relay Communications Architecture (ORCA) means the NRO will continue to rely primarily on its current generation of data-relay satellites for the foreseeable future, according to U.S. Navy Rear Adm. (select) Victor See, NRO director of communications system acquisition and operation.
