The capture of the $10 million Ansari X Prize Oct. 4 brought that history-making contest to a close while starting a new chapter in the quest to open up space to ordinary citizens. "This is the end of the begin- ning," Gregg Mary niak, executive director of the X Prize Foundation, said shortly after the Space-Ship One craft concluded its second space shot in less than a week with a per- fect landing at the Mojave Airfield in California. Plans already are in the works for an annual event in which privately built space vehicles will compete for cash prizes in a variety of categories, such as fastest turnaround, highest altitude and greatest number of passengers, said Peter Diamandis, founder and chairman of the St. Louis-based X Prize Foundation. The first X Prize Cup will be held in 2006 at the New Mexico Regional Spaceport near Las Cruces.
