Northrop Grumman Ready to Add Landsat Sensor to NPOESS

Northrop Grumman, the company building the next generation of U.S. weather satellites, has identified a way to add a Landsat-style sensor to one of those spacecraft and now needs a contract to begin that work in time to reduce the chances of a disruption in the availability of land remote sensing data, a company official said. "We have a rough idea of the area in the spacecraft where the instrument would go," said Fred Riker, Northrop Grumman's program director for the U.S. National Polar-orbiting Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS). "The final designs have not been offered up yet, but it should be within an envelope we can accommodate."
