Defense Spending Bill Puts Brakes on T-Sat, Spaced Based Radar

Congressional appropriators reined in two major U.S. Air Force satellite development efforts to drive home the message that the service must fix problems with its established space acquisition programs before getting heavily invested in new ones, sources on Capitol Hill said. In the Defense Appropriations Act for 2005, lawmakers made examples of the Transformational Communications Satellite (T-Sat) and Space Based Radar programs. House and Senate conferees, who put the finishing touches on the bill July 20, effectively torpedoed the Air Force's T-Sat schedule and relegated the Space Based Radar to a laboratory research effort.
