Not winning a contract to commercialize the U.S. government's land remote sensing program proved a fatal blow to Resource21, a company created in 1995 to provide satellite imagery to the agriculture market Resource21 of Englewood, Colo., was quietly shut down by its investors at the end of 2003, some three months after it failed to win NASA's Landsat Data Con-tinuity Mission contract despite being the only bidder for the job. The venture, whose biggest backer was Boeing Co., never be-gan work on the crop-monitoring satellite system it had been trying to finance since its formation.
