Mda Takes Down Target Launched From Alaska

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency's (MDA) Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system successfully intercepted a target missile Dec. 5 in what the MDA described as the most complex test of the system to date. The GMD system, developed by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems of St. Louis, has succeeded in eight of its 14 intercept tests, including each of the past three tests. The MDAhas intercepted 37 of 47 target missiles in testing across its missile defense systems, the release said. For this exercise, a target missile was launched from Kodiak, Alaska, and tracked by land- and sea-based radars. The GMD sys-tem received the tracking data and launched a ground-based interceptor 19 minutes later from the Ronald W. Reagan Missile Defense Site at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., which destroyed the target missile in space.
