Kehler: Military, Intelligence Needs Too Different for Sinqle Platforms To Serve Both

The United States must develop a satellite architecture for the future that accommodates separate satellites for military and intelligence purposes because the requirements of the two communities have diverged too far to be satisfied by single platforms intended to serve both, the head of Air Force Space Command said Oct. 30. U.S. Air Force Gen. Robert Kehler said he nation's overhead imagery architecture has historically been designed primarily for intelligence users, with military users being able to use the same data for strategic purposes. Today, satellites are used by the military through the entire chain of command and are an integral part of tactical warfare, Kehler said in remarks here at the Geolnt 2008 Symposium. "Our reconnaissance satellites have been designed, built and operated to meet the requirements of both the national intelligence and the joint force commanders," Kehler said. "I believe this approach is posing insurmountable problems, and those problems are going to get worse as we look to the future.
