NOAA Braces for 'Avalanche of Data' from New Weather Satellites

As the United States draws closer to launching new generations of weather satellites beginning in 2010, the National Ocean-ic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is hard at work figuring out how it will manage an environmental satellite database that is expected to grow by a factor of more than 200 over the next 12 years. All of the data from NOAA's current generation of polar-orbiting and geosynchronous weather satellites have been stored since 2001 in a database called the Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS).
