40 Years Later - U.S. Space Exploration Faces Another Gap

On July 20, people around the world will celebrate an American triumph. The 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing recalls a period of curiosity, ingenuity and perseverance that captured the world's imagination. I was in Houston interviewing with NASA for a spot in the astronaut corps in 1969 when Neil Armstrong took his first step on the lunar surface. It was phenomenal to observe it up close, but the moment was bittersweet. Even as we did something that had never been done before, we knew we wouldn't be doing it much longer. The program was winding down because of budget constraints.
