NASA Returns to the Moon with LRO

Forty years ago this month, Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the Moon. Over the next several years, waves of American astronauts - 12 in all -walked, rode and even hit golf balls on the Moon. Those Apollo missions were spectacular. Thanks to the lunar strolls, the experiments that took place and the rock and soil samples that were brought back (and still studied to this day), we took a quantum leap forward in terms of our understanding of our nearest celestial neighbor.rnDespite the achievements, however, we still have a lot to learn about the Moon. The Apollo missions only sampled a small fraction of the lunar nearside, and thanks to telescopic and lunar orbiter observations, we now know that the lunar surface isrnnot the same everywhere.
