Regional integration in South Asia: Essays in Honour

This book celebrates the work and career of the well-known transport economist from South Asia, the late Dr M. Rahmatullah, and above all is a tribute to him from his former colleagues and associates. Dr Rahmatullah was the director of Transport and Infrastructure Development at UN-ESCAP, Bangkok, and retired in June 2000, after 22 years of distinguished service. Prior to his appointment to UN-ESCAP, he had served in the Transport Division of Bangladesh Planning Commission. After his retirement from UN-ESCAP, he continued to pursue his lifelong passion and commitment to promote trade and connectivity in South Asia. Dr Rahmatullah was highly respected as both an academic and a practitioner in the field of transport economics. His research and advocacy for greater connectivity in Asia and South Asia in particular has been substantial and unique. Each chapter of this volume covers a topic of particular interest in line with Dr Rahmatullah's contribution to regional integration during his long career as transport economist.
