Few would deny that the marvels of modern communication rest firmly on the shoulders of those who preceded us. Or, as some have quipped, "The ancients have again stolen our secrets." Harking back, it is obvious that the industrial pioneers of some 200 years ago set the stage for what we now consider to be "commonplace" in our modern society. Hence, it is altogether fitting that we look back and examine the very essence of how these early pursuits spawned the "Age of Communications."
