Most of my professional life has been focused on electronic displays-the underlying technologies and how signals are transported and connected to them. Historically, displays have been the weakest link in the video signal chain, limited by resolution, brightness, color accuracy or a combination of those performance benchmarks. It's a whole different ballgame now. Displays have achieved 8K pixel resolution and they've added high dynamic range (HDR) with its associated wide color gamut (WCG). Liquid-crystal display (LCD) screens have reached 98 inches and prices have collapsed. Projectors can routinely pump out several thousand lumens of illuminance, with large models hitting as many as 50,000 lumens. We're now seeing flexible, organic-light-emitting-diode (OLED)-based displays come to market that can be curved or warped. Super-bright light-emitting-diode (LED)-based displays can more than hold their own outside in direct sunlight with contrasty, colorful images.
