It has been established that the superequivalent sorption of ammonia by peat is accounted for by a gain in the process energy, which occurs upon formation, by its molecules, of bridge hydrogen and donor-acceptor linkages between polyconjugated fragments. Transformation of the supramolecular structure of the organic matter of peat upon sorption of copper and iron ions contributes to the realization of the given mechanism, which compensates for the "loss" of ion-exchange groups.
