摘要

Imagine being plunged into a world where you can't even hear your own heartbeat and where the only conversation you have all day, everyday is with yourself. It's not a scenario any of us would relish, but for soldiers, who count hearing orders, sharing information and exchanging friendly banter as a basic necessity, an enforced silence would be a maddening experience. Yet this is the daily reality faced by Marc Crane, a former sergeant and radio operator in the Royal Engineers, whose gradual slide into deafness began while he was still a serving sapper. Just four years after he left the Army in 1994, he was declared 100 per cent deaf and found that the world, as he knew it, had changed forever.
