Firmin honour for flood work

Soldiers who assisted residents of Workington during devastating floods have scooped the prestigious Firmin Sword of Peace. The ceremonial honour is awarded annually to a unit or establishment from each of the Armed Forces plus one tri-Service formation. It goes to those judged to have made the most valuable contribution to humanitarian activities at home or overseas and was handed to members of 64 Works Group, Royal Engineers for their efforts back in 2009. At the request of civilian authorities, the troops provided a temporary footbridge across the River Derwent in just under two weeks from the first Army expert arriving on site.
