摘要

Alec Gibson could have sat out the war safe on the home front. His job in an armament firm was a reserved occupation, which meant he could not be called up. But keen to do his bit, the then 19-year-old "fiddled" his way into the Army by telling recruiters a white lie. "The site where I worked was in a garage, so I just said I worked in a garage and they never checked," he recalls. "All my friends were going into the Forces. Some had already been killed and I thought 'this isn't right -1 should be out there fighting as well'." It was a decision that would change the course of his life.
