The following intrinsic compressibility considerations relate to the sample slurries of various initial water contents for which the initial specific volume was calculated by the authors using four distinct equations. It has long been known (Skempton, 1944) that the slope of the compression curve (e:log σ'_v) of a reconstituted soil sample depends, in addition to the amount and type of clay minerals present, on the initial water content, w_i especially at low consolidation pressures (Fig. 13). Hence, a standard level of initial water content should be used to obtain a standard intrinsic compression curve as a reference state to understand and to quantify the soil structure at the natural state.
