Funerary Monuments & Memorials in St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh

The Tractarians hated the marble monuments with which the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had filled our medieval churches. In turn, the twentieth century despised the effigies and brasses of the Victorians. Gradually scholarship has noticed first the earlier post-Reformation monuments and more recently those of later date. On the analytical side, Mrs Esdaile has given way to Nigel Llewellyn, and the encyclopaedic 'Gunnis' to 'Roscoe'.
