The Schweizer 1-23E was built for Paul MacCready in 1954 expressly for World Championship competition in England. The wingspan was increased to 16 meters (52 feet 8 inches) for best performance, and balanced dive brakes appeared for the first time on a 1-23. Great effort was given to producing the smoothest possible surface finish, using butted panels instead of the usual lapped ones, as well as flush rivets.
