Patriot takes Q3'10 earnings hit due to coal production shortfall

Patriot Coal Corp. on Oct. 21 announced a hefty net loss for the third quarter, saying its earnings nwere negatively affected by production challenges at several mines. n nPatriot reported a third-quarter net loss of $46 million, or 51 cents per share, compared to net nincome of $52.8 million, or 58 cents per share, in the same period of 2009. The company's nthird-quarter results also lagged well behind its performance in the second quarter, when it nposted a net loss of $13.6 million.
