New 2.1 million-ton surface mine proposed in West Virginia

Jep Mining LLC has proposed a new surface mine in West Virginia that is expected to generate 2.1 million tons of steam-grade bituminous coal reserves from 461 acres over eight years. The company submitted an application for a water quality certification required under the Clean Water Act to discharge dredged or fill material into about four-tenths of an acre of water through the construction, operation and reclamation of the Hickory Patch surface mine, which would be located near Rupert in Greenbrier County, according to the application posted Sept. 12 on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website.
