MSHA: Coal production down sharply at Westmoreland’s San Juan coal mine

Westmoreland Coal Co. has significantly curtailed production from its San Juan coal mine which feeds a nearby power plant set to shut down by 2022. The New Mexico coal mine produced just 30,917 tons of coal in the first quarter of this year, down from 1.1 million in the prior quarter and 1.5 million tons in the year-ago period, according to U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration data. A source familiar with the mine’s customer, PNM Resources Inc.’s San Juan plant, said Westmoreland was conducting a longwall move in the quarter and is providing deliveries out of its inventory. Westmoreland did not respond to a request for a comment.
