NM governor heralds new bill to increase renewables standard to 50%

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham praised a state Senate bill thatwould increase New Mexico’s existing 20% renewable energy standard to50% by 2030 and allow a PNM Resources Inc. utility to impose a charge oncustomers to retire the coal-fired San Juan plant.PNM Resources’ regulated utility subsidiary Public Service Co. of NewMexico, in its 2017 integrated resource plan, called for replacing the San Juanplant and meeting future needs with natural gas peaking generation andrenewable resources, with the possibility of energy storage, too. The higherrenewables standard would serve as an added inducement for the utility,which goes by PNM, to rely more on renewables and less on gas.
