Routing Switcher and System Design Considerations for Large 3 Gbit/sec Core Facilities

Only a few years ago a 256 × 256 routing switcher was considered large and 1.5 Gbit/sec operation was the exception with most facilities running at 270 Mbits/sec. Today, routing systems in excess of 1000 × 1000 with 3 Gbit/sec performance are available. Operation at 1.5 Gbits/sec is standard and most facilities are looking to 3 Gbit/sec capability in the core. This paper investigates the tradeoffs between different design approaches and system architectures. It addresses connector and cable behavior, as well as fiber optic opportunities and the state of the art in cable equalization and signal reclocking in the context of providing a long lived infrastructure core for the next generation of television production and broadcasting.
