The 2013 NAB Show Technology Summit on Cinema, co-produced by SMPTE, took a look at innovations from 4K and 8K, to high frame rates (HFR), immersive sound, and managing data intensive workflows. So, who better to keynote the event, held on 6-7 April, than Jon Landau, the Oscar-winning producer of Avatar and Titanic, who with director James Cameron, has been a trailblazer for new technologies-and is continuing to do so as they plan production of the Avatar sequels. "Stories that could be conceived a few years ago could not be realized because the technology did not exist," Landau declared. "Now, if someone can dream it, someone can find a way to realize it. But let's not lose sight of why people go to the movies. They don't watch for technology, they watch because they make an emotional connection to a story." He added: "We want to take advantage of technology to make the next two movies even more emotionally engaging and visually tantalizing and to wrap up the story arc of our two main characters."
