This book adds to the small number of comprehensive works in Western historiography about the Soviet struggle behind the front line in the war of 1941 -45. It relies on a large number of published English- and Russian-language sources and secondary literature (including Soviet fiction), as well as documents from seven archives in the US and Russia. It might seem strange to use Soviet fiction as a source about partisans, though this was a means for disseminating Soviet propaganda, which at points continues latently to distort some of this book's analysis.
