摘要

David Kilcullen has written a book that will leave its mark. His focus on the nature of what goes on at the local level in communities in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Indonesia is among the best that I have read, quite thoroughly describing the dynamics and interactions of local politics and power structures as well as picking up on the nuances of local cultures and social mores. His emphasis on the importance for counterinsurgents to know, understand, and respect these dynamics and mores as a starting point for addressing insurgency, and better yet for preventing inadvertent creation of new generations of insurgents, is of central importance.
