After the World War One, the Soviet Union annexed a large part of Romania's sovereign territory. As a result, the Romanian citizens were rightfully bitter. After Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Hitler promised to return the Soviet-seized lands to Romania when the USSR was conquered. For this reason it is not surprising that the Romanian government considered Nazi Germany to be an ally and supplied Romanian soldiers to assist the Nazi's in their conquest of the USSR.rnSome of the Romanian soldiers were poorly trained and barely literate, though the Romanian mountain soldiers and frontier brigades were well trained. Additionally, some of the Romanian army divisions had a German training cadre. These divisions were very competent. Regardless of their education or training, all Romanian soldiers were highly motivated by the expectation of the return of their stolen lands. As proof of the motivated Romanian soldiers' ability, they captured the fortified Soviet city of Odessa without any German assistance.
