After the defeat of Germany in 1945, theAllies asserted their joint authority and sovereignty over the country. The United States,Great Britain, France and the Soviet Uniondivided Germany into four occupation zonesfor administrative purposes, creating what became collectively known as Allied-occupiedGermany. This division was ratified by the Allies at the Potsdam Conference.
