At first glance this appears to be another coffee table book but on opening proves to be more than that. It does, however, fall between two schools being more than just a photographic record, yet not quite having enough detail to be seen as a fully comprehensive reference work. The illustrations are in date order with captions, not only covering the image, but with added extras indicating the state of the class at that date. With regard to the captions, whilst they are informative, they lack the conventional italicisation of locomotive names and numbers. That is something you don't consciously notice until it isn't done.
