UK government ministers will no longer receive early access to official statistics produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The decision of the national statistician John Pullinger was announced in mid-June and followed the publication of a letter in The Times newspaper, signed by 114 academics, statisticians and other experts, calling for an end to "pre-release access" (see page 4, June 2017). But it is not only experts who are against this sort of preferential treatment. A survey by NatCen Social Research found that two-thirds of respondents supported the idea that official statistics should be made available to everybody at the same time (bit.ly/2r1liQn).
