Government Faces Information Security Challenges

Rapid technological advances, increasing applications of computer interconnectivity and expanding Internet usage are providing unparalleled opportunities for agency improvements in delivering services to the nation. However, these same advances also are challenging agencies to effectively protect the integrity, privacy and availability of the systems and data upon which they rely. Even before the events of September 11, the federal Chief Information Officers' (CIO) Council had recognized the heightened focus on security necessitated by the increasing threat to information systems from foreign nation states and the international hacker community. The proliferation of Internet connections and increased requirements for interoperability have exacerbated the problem. Senior executives are becoming more aware of information security issues, and effective management frameworks are needed for dealing with significant information technology security risks. The council seeks to lead the effort to ensure public confidence in the security of government electronic information and the availability of essential services. Federal CIOs are involved in several areas to meet the challenges of the future.
