No man may be an island,but each U.S. military base may become an energy island if a joint project among the Department of Energy the Department Homeland Security and the Defense Department comes to fruition. The effort aims to develop a microgrid that would supply a base with internal power independent of any external source that might fail as Network security would be a key element of this energy microgrid. Facing the possibility of a cyberattack on the nations power grid, military bases must be able to sustain internal power with a degree of immunity from the online tactics employed by cybermarauders.
