Chapter President Dave Elder kicked off the November luncheon with an announcement: The Fairbanks-area military and corporate community is in the process of chartering and establishing the Interior Alaska Chapter. The guest speaker for the luncheon, Noel Janda of DSI, then gave an overview of Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON), which are primarily used as a carrier service for the last mile, delivering data to homes and offices. While existing infrastructure can be utilized, new installations use less infrastructure, less air conditioning and less electricity. In support of green building technology, a large installation will cut capital costs up to 70 percent; require up to 80 percent less power; reduce floor, rack and closet space requirements up to 90 percent; and is Energy Star qualified. Janda was accompanied by Brandon Rosendale, who gave hands-on demonstrations of optical fiber splicing following lunch and trained individuals on how to use the equipment.
