The merger of Bell Atlantic, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and NYNEX, New York, creates a $51 billion organization with 26 million customers spread down the Atlantic seaboard from Maine to Virginia. The new Bell Atlantic formed from the two regional Bell operating companies will provide telecommunications, entertainment and information services worldwide. The merger creates the nation's second largest telecommunications company. The combined workforce of the two companies is more than 133,000. The combined customer base includes 3.6 million worldwide wireless users. Corporate headquarters will be in New York. The new firm's major business units will include wireless and global enterprises, a telecommunications group and network services. Both companies' boards of directors have approved the merger.
