Dear readers, Matthias Ruete, the ERTMS coordinator of the European Commission, recently stated in an interview that the ERTMS route installation needs to be significantly accelerated. At present, some 6,800 km of ETCS are currently operating on the core network corridors (thus equipment has been installed on 14% of the lines). In addition, around 7,000 km are under construction on the core network corridors. If you look at the 27 EU countries, together with Norway and Switzerland, more than 41,000 km are under contract. But that is not enough, according to Matthias Ruete, to enable the many ERTMS islands to be quickly connected to form efficient corridors.
