Dear readers,the rapporteur at the European Parliament's Transport Committee, Izaskun Bilbao Barandica (Spain), lamented in the draft status report on the European-wide im-plementation of ETCS that, despite having received European subsidies amounting to 2.7 billion EUR in the period between 2014 and 2020, only 13 % of the operating length of the European core network corridors has been fitted with ERMTS/ETCS. 80 % of the new locomotives brought into operation up to the middle of 2019 were apparently still with Special ETCS versions or completely without any ETCS. The rapporteur recommended a series of measures aimed at - as the member states had agreed - installing ERTMS on the core network corridors by 2030 and on the overall network by 2040. In Germany, the Transport Committee at the Federal Assem-bly has pleaded for ETCS vehicle funding. The Federal Government is expected to fund the equipping and retrofitting of locomotives with ERTMS /ETCS from the "climate friendly mobility" aspect of the DARP coronavirus stimulus program. This edition of SIGNAL+DRAHT deals with the deployment of ETCS at large railway stations using the example of the Stuttgart Main Station, as well as with the experi-ences gained from the responsibility for ETCS construction after five years of oper-ations on the VDE 8.2 Erfurt - Leipzig/ Halle line.
