Nokia to equip expanded WESTbahn fleet

Austrian rail operator WESTbahn has contracted Nokia to implement a secure, high performance, broadband train-to-ground communications solution for its new expanded intercity train fleet. Following the recent commissioning of 15 Stadler trains for WESTbahn's Vienna - Salzburg line, Nokia will supply, deploy and maintain WiFi access points, intelligent multipath switching and control systems at WESTbahn's Operations Control Centre (OCC).To ensure the quality of service required by WESTbahn, Nokia is deploying intelligent switching - a multi-path connectivity algorithm that optimally routes traffic through redundant network gateways. These gateways simultaneously connect to multiple local cellular networks and ensure high quality on-board connectivity by selecting and aggregating available bandwidth over the highest performing channels. End-to-end security mechanisms ensure secure operational data exchange between the trains and the WESTbahn OCC.
