Increased use of natural gas and renew-ables, together with energy efficiency policies, reduces carbon dioxide emissions from the U.S. energy sector to their Lowest level since 1994. Thanks to abundant, cheap natural gas, Duke Energy permanently shuts down its Crystal River Unit 3 nuclear plant in Florida rather than undertake a costly retrofit. The reactor had been offline since 2009.
