Siemens is upgrading the Emschermuendung sewage treatment plant on the Rhine River. When the project is completed in 1999 the discharged water will be up to 99% pure. Germany's longest and most majestic river, the Rhine is also one of Europe's most important arteries for barge traffic and for drinking water. As it makes its way to the North Sea, the Rhine is fed by scores of streams and rivers, a number of which flow through the Ruhr Valley - the most densely populated region in Europe, and the site of Germany's industrial heartland. Clearly, water quality on the Rhine is affected by these rivers. So it is essential that sewage be treated long before it reaches the Rhine.
